Backup your computer often!

Even if you know how to back up your computer, you may not do it as often as you should. It can be a tedious process and is often the last thing you think of while you are using your computer. Whether you are using your home computer or a work computer with important files, it is important to backup your computer often. Without a backup of files and important information, you can lose important data, pictures, and documents.

Start by organizing your files on a regular basis. If the default folders don’t suit your organizational skills, create a system that is easy for you.

External Hard Drives

When you can afford the investment, purchase an external hard drive. They are very affordable, and you can purchase 250GB of external hard drive storage for around $40. This is much less expensive than online storage. An external hard drive is essential, as many different malfunctions can render your computer useless. When you have your files on an external hard drive, you can easily plug the drive into a different computer and access your files.

CD and DVD Backups

Since even external hard drives are fallible, copy your most important files onto CDs or DVDs. The burning process is different depending on your operating system, but you can typically drag and drop files into the CD drive to begin the copying process. Label the cds then store them in hard cases or a cd book.

Backup With Flash Drive

Use the same “drag and drop” method to backup your computer to flash drives. You can find 16GB flash drives starting around $25. They are compact and simple to use. Just simply plug into a USB port and save to the tiny storage devices. Once you’re done, put in a drawer or other safe place, and your information will stay safely stored.

Online Backup Services

If you don’t trust yourself to keep cds or other storage device safe, you may want to choose to backup your computer to an online backup service. Most of these services simply detect when you save or modify a file, and they take care of the backup process by uploading these new files in real time.
